In West Friesland you can still find them: wide open spaces and idyllic landscapes where you can enjoy peace and quiet. So far this region has remained unaffected by mass tourism.
The region is full of orchards, polders, colourful flower fields and picturesque villages. And the IJsselmeer on your doorstep offers great holiday entertainment, including beach and water sport facilities.
This region was already well–known in the old days. The age–old West Frisian Ring Dike which surrounds the region is a striking landmark. The dike was originally built to protect against the salty waters of the former Zuiderzee.
Nowadays, the dike is an attractive cycling and hiking trail, which people enjoy in their leisure time. In some parts, it is even accessible to cars. It offers a unique view in both directions: across the IJsselmeer, which is spectacular at any time, and across the hinterland.
But also the historical merchant towns of Enkhuizen, Hoorn and Medemblik are easily accessible by car or bicycle. Amsterdam and the well–known fishing villages, Volendam, Marken, Edam and Monnickendam, are less than an hour’s drive away.
